We also passed by a southern BBQ joint called Moe's near the pier entrance on Pomeroy Avenue. They were just opening and the smell of smoked goodness was wafting on the street. It was intoxicating and we were instantly drawn inside. They did not disappoint with the pulled pork, ribs, beans, and cornbread we had for brunch. Do yourself a favor and eat there. For dessert, I stopped in the candy shop and got my sour gummy and salt water taffy fix. They also sold chocolate covered crickets, but some things are just not meant to be consumed, so I took a pass on that one.
One of our first few stops in California, once we got on the coastline, was Pismo Beach. This was a fun beach town to trek around in. Spent some time on the pier, hung out with a pelican, and took in the amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. The beach was beautiful, but it was also a very windy day so we didn't spend too much time bathing in the sun. The sand would sting us and leave a few layers on top of our skin. On the plus side, when I went back to the hotel and showered, I felt like I had seriously exfoliated.

Back in March, I went on a road trip to southern California for a few weeks. Mostly to spend time in the beach towns, and get some much-needed vitamin D. We get a lot of rain where I live, and like Superman, I need to get re-energized by the sun. But while there, I also checked out some touristy places like the San Diego Zoo and Yosemite National Park, among other spots.
I'd like to share some pics of the adventures by featuring places in upcoming blog posts. While traveling, I took about 4,000+ images and am still going through them all. So I figured small batches are easier to digest for both our sakes. ;) Here are a few previews below. Be sure to follow me on my Facebook page to get updates when future posts are published. Got up early this morning to catch a rare celestial event; the shortest "Blood Moon" total lunar eclipse this century. The moon reached totality for only a couple minutes, and reappeared with a coppery glow. It was quite beautiful to watch.
Okay, back to bed. One of my favorite annual conventions here in Vancouver is Fan Expo. A glorious three-day event where comic, anime/manga, and sci-fi fans congregate with creators, artists, experts, and guest stars. At this geeky shangri-la you'll find; lots of great photo ops, opportunities to meet and greet some awesome celebrities, many panels and workshops to attend, shopping, parties, and one of my favorite parts; cosplay. What is cosplay? It's a portmanteau of the words "costume play", and is a performance art in which participants called cosplayers wear costumes and fashion accessories to represent a specific character or idea. Most of all, it's fun. Although I didn't cosplay myself when I went the last couple years (aside from wearing my Soft Kitty hoodie), but I did get to meet Stan Lee in 2013 and thanked him for the Marvel Universe. Bucket List: CHECK! This year, Fan Expo is during the Easter long weekend (April 3 - 5) so I will only be able to attend one day this year instead of the usual three, but I'd like to share some highlights from the last two conventions until then. Imagine having a puppy AND a kitten in your home! Cuteness overload!
Sadie is a beautiful Samoyed puppy and Cleo is a sweet tabby kitten and they are both just under six months old. These two had so much energy and sillyness that it was hard to keep them still for a picture, but I managed to get a few good shots. They were adopted around the same time as well, so that they could get used to each other right away and grow up together. They are still learning their boundaries, but are on their way to becoming the best of buds! On a recent trip to the Riviera Maya in Mexico, we took a walk along the beach and found an abandoned resort between the Iberostar Grand Paraíso and the Belmond Maroma. A local friend told me that the rumor is some rich man, from the Mexican cartel, was building this private resort. However, he fell victim to homicide so it never got finished. I don't know if that story is true or not but it has since been abandoned. Of course we had to go in and check it out. We found some fire extinguishers, and noted that they all haven't been inspected since 2009 and figured that was the last time any work was done.
There was only one room fully set up, which we assumed was the showroom for potential clients. It had a bed, furniture, safe, books, a couple unopened bottles of Sol, bathroom lotions, art, carpeting, etc. All of it was still there, even though the room looked like a ransacked pig sty. The marble held up well, but the stonework needed a serious pressure wash all around. Lots of overgrown vegetation, rusty metal, broken wood, and some of the pools were full of murky rainwater, but I imagine the grounds would have looked amazing if it was completed. But in its own way, it was hauntingly beautiful and fun to check out. $5 PRINTS FOR SALE - 100% of the funds will go to O.W.L. - FUNDRAISER ENDS 02/12/15
There is an amazing place in the community of Delta, BC called O.W.L. - Orphaned Wildlife Rehablitiation Society. They are a non-profit organization, whose volunteers are dedicated to public education and the rehabilitation and release of injured and orphaned birds. I have been lucky to view the release of not only bald eagles, but other birds of prey. As some of you know, the avian flu is on the rise and more diligence is being taken to avoid further outbreak in our province. The staff at O.W.L. in particular, are taking every step possible to protect their birds of prey to make sure none get infected with the avian flu. One of these steps, was to close its doors to the public. This means no public tours, no school field trips, and no main source of income. Their funds are now nearly depleated and they need our help. (Check out the news story link below) Below are some photos I took there during my last visit, and to help raise funds, I am offering 5x7 size prints for $5.00* each. 100% of those proceeds raised will go directly to O.W.L. Rehabilitation Society. If you would like to help and purchase a print, please contact me. And when they lift the public closure, please do go and check them out. Meet some of my winged friends like Snoopy, Nelson, Daddy, Sara, and many more! Today I was walking around Steveston and I had my camera with me (as always) so I took some shots in between takes (it's respectful to not take pictures during filming). I got to meet some of the cast members from the show and caught some of the action. Benito is another beautiful baby I had the pleasure of photographing last month. He is just over five months old here and has the greatest expressions!
Last week I met up with a dear old friend and her sister at Deer Lake Park in Burnaby, BC. They wanted to get a few pictures of their kids with some red leaves in the background for their parents, and luckily the park still had some beautiful colours to work with.
